Cypress Hill built their sound in South Gate, California, DJ Muggs' murky, bass-heavy production behind B-Real's nasal delivery and Sen Dog's gruff counterpoint. Black Sunday, their 1993 sophomore album, took that sound national, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 on the strength of Insane in the Brain, one of the most recognizable hip-hop singles of the decade. The Soul Assassins circle they built around themselves, DJ Muggs' production reaching into House of Pain and beyond, made Cypress Hill one of the genuine connective threads running through 90s West Coast hip-hop.
