Southern Hip-Hop

Houston, Memphis, New Orleans. Three cities that built their own sound without asking for permission from New York or Los Angeles. The Geto Boys introduced the South to a national audience in 1991 and got their records pulled from distribution for their trouble. Scarface spent three decades proving that Houston rap had more emotional range than anyone gave it credit for. Young Dolph built the blueprint for independent artist economics out of Memphis and paid for it with his life. The South has always had something to say.
