Insane in the Brain (7")
Most people know "Insane in the Brain" as one of hip-hop's biggest party anthems. Fewer know it started as a diss track. Chubb Rock had flipped some of Cypress Hill's own lyrics on his 1992 single "Yabba Dabba Doo," and B-Real and Sen Dog clapped back, B-Real subtly, Sen Dog considerably less so. The beef got buried under the song's own massive success, it hit No. 1 on the US rap charts in 1993 and became a genuine pop crossover. DJ Muggs built the track from Sly and the Family Stone, The Youngbloods, and a George Semper cover of "Get Out My Life, Woman," the same idiosyncratic sound he'd go on to lend to House of Pain and Funkdoobiest. The only prior official 7" pressing was Philippines-only and now trades for hundreds of dollars on the secondary market, this reissue puts a real hip-hop classic back in reach.
