Freddie Gibbs came up on the streets of Gary, Indiana, and brought that unvarnished reality to every bar on Pinata without exaggeration or performance. Madlib built the album from loops that sound like they were excavated from crates nobody else had access to, mixing dusted funk, soul, and film scores into something simultaneously raw and sophisticated. The combination produced one of the defining rap albums of the 2010s: seventeen tracks with appearances from Earl Sweatshirt, Danny Brown, Raekwon, Scarface, Domo Genesis, and Ab-Soul, none of it softened, none of it staged. Gibbs called it a gangster Blaxploitation film on wax. That's exactly what it is.
