Bandana (LP)
Five years after Pinata, Freddie Gibbs and Madlib returned with a second collaboration that matched its predecessor without repeating it. Madlib pulled from an entirely different crate: denser, stranger, harder to place. Gibbs brought the philosophical edge he had developed while incarcerated, writing bars that moved between Gary, Indiana street corners and something closer to manifesto. Pusha T, Killer Mike, Anderson Paak, Yasiin Bey, and Black Thought each appear exactly once and make it count. The chemistry between Gibbs and Madlib is as natural as any in hip-hop. Bandana is the second chapter of a trilogy. Montana is still coming.
