Kendrick Lamar grew up in Compton and spent fifteen years building one of the most deliberate catalogs in rap history. Good Kid M.A.A.D City arrived in 2012 as a concept album about one night in his neighborhood and earned four Grammy nominations including Album of the Year. To Pimp a Butterfly in 2015 was a complete reorientation of what a rap album could be. DAMN. won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2018, the first rap album to do so. He has not made a bad record. He has also not made the same record twice.
