Guru and DJ Premier made Moment of Truth while Guru was facing real prison time, arrested for carrying a weapon into LaGuardia Airport, then hit with an assault charge on top of it, lawyers warning the group he could be incarcerated by the time the album dropped. DJ Premier has said directly that they rushed to finish it so it could support Guru financially and reach fans regardless of what happened to him. That's the "moment of truth" the title actually refers to. Released in 1998, it went gold, features Scarface and Wu-Tang's Inspectah Deck among its guests, and is widely regarded as the duo's creative peak, the album that proved real hip-hop could stay grounded while everything around it chased something flashier.
